A slitting machine needs stable web position before the material reaches the knife section and before finished rolls are wound. If the web wanders, the result can be uneven slit width, poor roll edge quality, telescoping rolls or frequent operator adjustment.

Start with the guiding position

Unwind guiding corrects the parent roll before the web enters the line. Infeed guiding stabilizes the web before slitting. Rewind guiding helps finished rolls build with cleaner edges. Wide slitter rewinders may need separate correction points because one guide only corrects the web at its installed position.

Match the sensor to the material

Opaque paper, label stock and many laminated webs can often use infrared edge sensing. Transparent film, low-contrast film and reflective materials usually need ultrasonic or CCD review. Printed-line guiding should be checked with the printed mark width, mark color and background contrast.

Check actuator stroke and thrust

Actuator stroke should cover expected roll loading error, web wander and a commissioning margin. Thrust depends on frame weight, web width, roll weight and correction structure. A narrow label slitter and a wide flexible-packaging slitter should not be specified from the same actuator assumption.

RFQ information to prepare

  • Machine type and guiding position: unwind, infeed or rewind
  • Maximum and minimum web width
  • Material type, thickness or GSM, and edge condition
  • Line speed, roll weight and roll diameter
  • Required correction stroke and power supply
  • Photos or drawings of the installation area

FAQ

Is unwind guiding enough for a slitting machine?

Only if the main drift enters from the parent roll and the downstream web path stays stable. If drift appears near knives or rewind shafts, another guiding position may be needed.

Which sensor is best for film?

Transparent or low-contrast film should usually be reviewed for ultrasonic or CCD sensing. Infrared sensing is more suitable when the film edge has stable optical contrast.

What mistake causes poor guiding selection?

The most common mistake is specifying a controller only, without checking sensor type, actuator stroke, frame load and available mounting space.
